Iranians rank first among asylum seekers in UK in 2021
In 2021, there were 48 thousand and 540 asylum claims registered in the
UK. This figure was 63 percent higher than the previous year and a record high
in the past two decades.
The increase in asylum claims in the UK has partly been due to the
easing of COVID-related restrictions on international travel and considerable
increase of small-boat entrances to the UK, almost all of which claim asylum.
Iranian have maintained their ranking since 2016 as the top national
group to seek asylum in the UK. In 2021, Iranian nationals in this country
registered 9800 asylum claims.
Iraq, Eritrea, Albania, and Syria rank second to fifth after Iran on the
list in 2021. Statistics show that the number of claims from the top 10
countries is not just higher than 2020 (the year affected by the pandemic), but
also higher than pre-pandemic figures.
The acceptance rate of refugee claims from Syrian nationals in 2021 was
at an all-time high of 99 percent while the rate was 97 and 96 percent for
nationals of Eritrea and Sudan, respectively. The acceptance rate of Iranians’
asylum claims was 89 percent in 2021.
